About Google RankBrain
In the previous article, we talked about some of Google’s ranking factors behind its search engine. Now we will discuss a fairly recent algorithm that has become highly significant in Google’s processing of searches.
Google revealed its 3rd most important ranking factor out of 200 major factors named as RankBrain on the 26th of October, 2015. RankBrain is an algorithm learning artificial intelligence system. It is the inclusion of machine learning and artificial intelligence that distinguishes it from Google’s other ranking factors. It analyzes users’ search queries and rank results after going through its AI. According to Google’s research scientist Greg Corrado’s explanation:
“If you’re searching for an ambiguous query, or you’re using colloquial terms or talking to Google like it was a person, traditionally computers will break down because they can’t understand your query or they haven’t seen that phrase before. RankBrain can generalize to: ‘That phrase seems like something I’ve seen in the past, so I’m going to assume that you meant this.’ It’s much like a person hearing you talking to them in a crowded bar – they can’t hear everything you’re saying, but they still can guess what you’re meaning and have a conversation with you.”
What Is So ‘Intelligent’ About Google RankBrain?
Some of the ‘intelligent’ things this algorithm can perform are:
- It consistently ‘learns’ the patterns of its users. If RankBrain sees a word or phrase it isn’t familiar with, the machine can make a guess as to what words or phrases might have a similar meaning and filter the result accordingly, making it more effective at handling never-before-seen search queries or keywords. Whenever it gets a set of words that is not available to it, it makes guesses and tries to get to words with similar spellings.
- It can also generate results after taking the country of the user in account. For example, a search of “Where is NY SEO Agency?” will produce more ‘New York’ related searches of New York’s SEO agencies in USA while the same search query will result in different results in the United Kingdom.
- It also uses historical data to guess a better result of the query.
