Los Angeles SEO Basics –
Search engine optimization is similar to a book. Most books have a title, chapter titles, subtitles, and an ending. The chapter titles within the book are based around/similar to the main title of the book. For example, if you’re a reading a book on cake recipes, you’re not going to find a random chapter about “how to make money online.” This seems like common sense, but a lot of Los Angeles business owners don’t think about this when they set up their website.
When you start a website for your business in Los Angeles, you have to decide what your website is going to be about and stick to that subject. If your website is about 20 different subjects, then it’ll be hard for search engines to determine what your website is about.
Search Engine Optimization Tags
Websites have something called “tags” which are similar to book titles and chapters. The most important tag on your website is your “Title Tag.” The title tag tells search engines what your entire website is about, and this is similar to a book title.
Type any website into your address bar, and the text you see on the web browsers tab is called the title tag. Your title tag should have your main keywords that you’re trying to rank for. A lot of Los Angeles businesses use their company name as their title tag, but the only thing that’ll help you do is rank for your business name.
Let’s say that your business name is “Mickey & Marcys Tech” and you sell used computers. If you set your title tag to “Mickey & Marcys Tech” that’s the phrase you’re going to rank for. The problem with that is that you sell used computers, so your title tag should be something like:
- Used Computers
- Refurbished Computers
- Used Laptops
- Discount Computers
- Low Cost Laptops
The next important tag for search engine optimization in Los Angeles is your description tag. Search engines scan your description tag to determine what your website is about, and your keyword should be in your description tag as well.
Your description tag shows up as the text under your website within the search engines. This text usually has to be less than 160 characters and should contain:
- Your main keywords
- Call to action (call now, contact us, read more..)
- Phone number if applicable
People are more lazy than ever, and sometimes they’ll just read the description tag to determine if they’ll click on your link or not. So a quick call to action will encourage people to click on your link from the search engine; and if you include your phone number, then it’s like a business listing.
Depending on the type of business you have, some people are probably just looking for a contact number. If a potential client can write down your contact number without clicking on your website, you just made it easier for them.
H1 & H2 SEO Tag
If the title tag is like the title of your book, then the H1 tag are chapter titles to your book. Your homepage (and all of the pages and posts on your website) should start with an H1 tag. The H1 tag tells search engines and readers what content they can expect to read on the page. Your H1 tag should have the same/similar keywords as your title tag.
H2 tags are like sub-chapters or subheadings. You should include at least one H2 tag on your homepage and the other pages of your website. H3 – H6 tags are optional, but H1 & H2 tags are a must. This isn’t only good for search engine optimization, but it helps structure the content in a way that’s easy for your readers to understand.
Important Tip About SEO Tags in Los Angeles
Your tags need to be in the correct order, don’t skip tags. If you skip the H1 tag and start with an H2 tag, then search engines will probably ignore any other tags under that H2 tag.
Also if you start with an H1 tag, and then skip to an H3 tag next, search engines will ignore all your H3 tags because you skipped the H2 tag. If you’re going to use tags on your page, you need to use them in the correct order for them to count.
Remember, this is like a book and your page has to make sense. That’s why H1 tags use the biggest font, and the font gets smaller as you move your way down to the H6 tag. A lot people use “tags” to increase the size of the font, but you shouldn’t do that.
If you want to increase the size of your font, then change the size of the font on your style-sheet. If you have an HTML website, your designer will be able to help you with this; but if you have a WordPress website, there are plugins that will increase the font size for you.
If you use tags to increase your font size, you’ll end up with a page that has too many H1 and H2 tags. If you have too many H1 and H2 tags on the same page, then it’s the equivalent of having a book with chapters within chapters… within chapters! Just remember the format below:
- Title Tag – Book title
- Description Tag – Description of book
- H1 Tag – Chapter of book
- H2 Tag – Sub chapters
